Turrin, Joseph
Joseph Turrin’s music has been commissioned and performed by the some of the worlds leading orchestras, chamber ensembles and soloists. His work encompasses many varied forms, including film, theater, opera, orchestral, chamber, jazz, electronic, and dance. Several of his film and recording projects have been nominated for Emmy and Grammy Awards. His works have been recorded on: RCA, Naxos, EMI, Teldec, Summit, Klavier, Cala, Albany, MSR Classics, Crystal, and others.
Not only a recipient of several commissions from the New York Philharmonic, the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Carnegie Hall, Canadian Brass, Live from Lincoln Center and Evelyn Glennie, his works have been championed by such noted musicians and ensembles as Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Erich Leinsdorf, Wynton Marsalis, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Gewandhausorchestra (Leipzig, Germany), English Chamber Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, New Orleans Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet, United States Air Force Band, United States Marine Band (The Presidents Own), Eastman Wind Ensemble, Nashville Symphony, Joseph Alessi, Philip Myers and Philip Smith.
As a conductor he has guest conducted the orchestras of Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New Orleans, and New Jersey. His publishers include: Theodore Presser, Boosey and Hawkes, Edition Peters, Edition BIM, C. Alan Publications, Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard. He has received awards and grants from the National Endowment on the Arts, National Band Association Revelli Composition Award, ASCAP, American Music Center, United Nations, New Jersey State Council On the Arts and Meet the Composer. In 2006 his opera The Scarecrow was chosen by the National Opera Association as one of three outstanding chamber operas and in the same year the American Academy of Arts and Letters gave special mention to the piece. In 2006 he also received an honorary degree from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester.
Mr. Turrin studied composition at the Eastman and the Manhattan School of Music and is currently on the composition faculty at the Hartt School and Montclair State University.
