Simmons, Aubrey
Aubrey Simmons is currently the Director of Bands at the Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Georgia. Originally from Mount Olive, North Carolina, Aubrey attended North Carolina Central University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethnomusicology. He also has some Masters of Music in Conducting credit from Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. During his time at North Carolina Central University Aubrey participated in the Marching Band (The Marching Sound Machine), Symphonic Band, and was a part of the Honors College as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow Scholarship Recipient. He served as Drum Major for the Marching Band, Student Arranger, as well as Student Conductor for the Symphonic Band. Through the Honors College he was able to serve as a University Ambassador of NCCU.
Upon graduation from NCCU Aubrey began his career in education serving as the Director of Bands at First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Florida from 2010 until 2013. During his tenure at First Coast, the band earned many trophies and accolades. This was to include being voted the “Best Band in the Region” by News 4 Jax. In 2013, Aubrey left Florida to take the helm of the Brooks County High School Band Program. While there he was tasked to rebuild, rebrand, and retool the band program. During his tenure at Brooks County High School (2013-2018) Aubrey grew the band in both numbers and musicianship, eventually leading them to an 11th Place finish at the High Stepping Nationals Band Competition in 2016. His bands at Brooks County High also received numerous superior ratings in both the marching and concert band arenas.
Currently, Aubrey is the Director of Bands at the Bradwell Institute. In his short time here has transformed the band program. In his first year (2018), the Marching Tiger Band placed 5th in the National High Stepping Competition. They have also received numerous superior ratings at band festivals both marching and symphonic. Aubrey is developing a program called “The Principle Driven Band.” The program at Bradwell focuses on “Pride, Accountability, Work Ethic, Excellence and Scholarship.” This is used to make sure the culture of the band program remains top-tier.
In addition to his duties as a band director, Aubrey serves as clinician across the southeastern region of the United State for Percussion, Music Arranging, Band Pedagogy, Drill Writing, and Conducing. Aubrey has conducted clinics for the Smith-Waldbridge Clinics (Illinois), Alabama A&M University, Wayne County Public Schools (North Carolina), and Durham County Public Schools (North Carolina). He is also a Salyers Percussion Education Representative. Aubrey holds memberships in the following organizations: National Association for Music Educators, Georgia Association of Music Educators, Professional Association of Georgia Educators, Georgia Educators Association, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
Aubrey is the loving husband of Rhonda, father to three beautiful children: A’Breya, Abram, and Avery. They are his world and he loves spending time with them as much as his schedule allows.
