Miller, Magen
Born in Dallas, Magen Miller (b. 1987) began her musical training on piano at the age of five. She later took up violin/fiddle and has studied both formally. Early in her professional career she began experimenting with improvisation which led to her earliest compositions. As a high school student Mrs. Miller wrote primarily for piano and strings. Her first orchestra piece was premiered by the Garland (TX) High School Honors Orchestra in 2005. That year she was also awarded the William Gillock Memorial Award by the Richardson Music Teachers Association for one of her piano compositions.
Mrs. Miller attended Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University where she received the Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After graduation, she accepted a position as orchestra director of Pegasus Charter School in Dallas.
Mrs. Miller's writing is considered extremely diverse with a catalogue that includes electro-acoustic music, string quartets, music for film and rock music. Her recent interest in political writing has worked its way into her compositional style. In addition to her work as a composer and as founder/owner of the Dallas Artists Guild-an organization whose mission is to spark interest in independent work and collaboration with musicians-Mrs. Miller teaches piano, violin, and fiddle in her private studio as a member of the Dallas Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. She is fiddler for the Texas Country Band, 'Due South', and plays violin with the Meadows World Music Ensemble at Southern Methodist University.
