Hoyos, Jorge
Born in 1984 in Medellin, Colombia, Jorge Hoyos Rentería is a composer, classical guitar performer, and theory professor. Among the awards he has received are from the Antioquia vive la música competition for his piece Sabaneta, and from the Musicalia of the Institute of Arts in Cuba contest for his performance of Latin-American repertoire in 2008.
His works vary from orchestral to chamber and solo pieces, several of which have been commissioned and performed by artists and ensembles, such as clarinetist Javier Asdrubal Vinasco, percussionist Carlos Areiza, pianist Andrés Gomez Bravo, the Aletheia ensemble, the Percanto percussion ensemble, and the Amadeus Orchestra among others.
Hoyos studied at the Adventist University of Colombia where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 2006. In 2010 he graduated from The Superior Institute of Arts in Cuba as a classical guitar performer. He also took composition master classes with Tulio Peramo and Alfredo Diez Nieto. In 2015 he obtained a Master’s degree in Music Composition with professors Andrés Posada, Marco Alunno, and Victor Agudelo at EAFIT University. Other teachers and mentors include Mark Olivieri, Javier Alvarez, Jesús Ortega, Roberto Kessel, Eduardo Martín, Elvira Fuentes, Fabio Zanon, and Martin Pedreira.
At present he works as music theory professor at the Adventist University of Colombia and the Metropolitan Institute of Technology. He also coordinates the music education research group SEMUS at the Adventist University.
