Green, Jonathan
Jonathan D. Green serves as Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Illinois Wesleyan University. He was previously Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sweet Briar College, where he received the 1999 Award for Excellence in Teaching. As a composer, he has received awards from ASCAP, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Among his 140+ compositions are numerous songs, choral works, three piano concertos, and seven symphonies. Among his many commissions are Riding the Winds of December, which was performed by the school children of Dare County as part of the centennial celebration of first flight at Kitty Hawk, and A Devil’s Abecedarium, which was recently premiered at Carnegie Hall. He is also is the author of seven music-reference books.
Green received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Fredonia School of Music, a Master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts where he was an Ornest Fellow, he completed additional studies at Chautauqua Institution, and received the Doctorate of Musical Arts in conducting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he was a University Excellence Fellow. He studied composition with Robert Stern and Salvatore Macchia, and Eddie Bass.
Green is a member of ASCAP, the Conductors Guild, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and serves on the boards of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. He has given numerous presentations on a variety of topics in higher education for the Council of Independent Colleges, the Annapolis Group, and the American Council on Education.
