Brown, John

    John Brown

John "Hound" Brown was born in Goldsboro, NC and began playing drums at a very early age. He studied at UNCG and was a part of the funk band, MAJOSHA, featuring rock artist Ben Folds. Hound’s Nashville career started in the mid 1990’s where he quickly became a sought-after touring and session drummer. Over a decade later, after playing on hundreds of recordings, demos, masters and Grammy-winning albums, he has evolved into a full fledged Americana artist in his own right. Known for his southern grooves and organic approach to the art of drumming and percussion, John is also an authentic, classic storyteller and southern medicine man; an artist who plants a musical landscape influenced by Jackson Browne & Little Feat, Jimmy Buffet and Mark Twain, Lyle Lovett and the Bible.

Raised on the tobacco roads of eastern North Carolina, John has toured, written, and recorded music with a who’s who of major recording artists, producers and songwriters, including John Berry, Martina McBride, Billy Dean, Susie Boggus, John Hiatt and the Zac Brown Band. With a rootsy, folk rock approach, he has created a career of both music and word and branded it “Plowology.” John sowed the first seeds of his unique artistry with his 2003 recording, Next of Kin. That same year he co-wrote the hit musical, The Bell Witch Ballet, which was nominated for the 2004 Benois De La Danse awards. John’s classic song Real Things, co-written with country artist Billy Dean, was the title track of Joe Nichols’ 2007 Universal South major release, receiving a New York Times Critic’s Choice review and garnering Rolling Stone praise, in the Guy Clark mode. That same year he released the CD Plowology: Stompin’ Grounds. Also an accomplished author/poet/satirist, his writings recently bookended the Zac Brown Band folklore/cookbook, Southern Grounds, from cover to cover, while he continues work on a non-fiction novel.

Still an active drummer in the southeastern US music scene, John spends most of his time touring, writing & recording as “John Brown’s Plowology.” He has released 2 Indie CD’s and is currently working on a third while his songs are constantly on hold by major recording artists. Whether laying down a groove, delivering a song or sharing a story, John Brown continues to share his life’s work, a limerick, and a laugh with character and substance. “Plowology... is the root of it all.”
