    Michael Brand

Michael Brand was born in England in 1952 and attended Haberdashers’ Aske’s School Elstree, from where he won an Open Scholarship to read music at University College Oxford. After graduating in 1974 he worked as a freelance conductor and arranger in London joining BBC Radio 2 as a producer in 1979.

He left the BBC in 1982 to concentrate on writing and publishing. For over 20 years he was Managing Director of R Smith and Co Ltd – internationally renowned publishers and distributors of educational music. He now runs and writes for G & M Brand Publications – the prestigious British catalogue specialising on Concert Band music.

His own band music is written for all grades: Dreams and Fancies was commissioned by a top Dutch Fanfare Band for the Kerkrade Music Festival in Holland, and tuba virtuoso Stephen Sykes commissioned Four Temperaments which he premiered at the Midwest Band Clinic Chicago in 2001. Many of Michael’s works and arrangements for younger bands are on contest and festival lists throughout the world including Avebury Circles, Agincourt Variations, and Angel of the North. His cantata for Choir and Band, Pioneer 10, written with rock lyricist Judge Smith, was performed at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

Michael has also written extensively for the music theatre. Recently his World War 1 music drama King & Country with libretto by Jane Bramwell was produced at the Brighton Festival, England in 2014 (www.kingandcountryopera.co.uk) and his latest musical CLD- The Real Lewis Carroll, again written with Jane and incorporating Lewis Carroll’s verses and characters, was produced at Petworth in Sussex in 2015.
